5 Spring Rainy Day Pleasures

In between our homeschool lessons, an influx of doctor’s appointments, work, renovating, and gardening, we find it necessary to plan little pleasures to calm, rejuvenate, and excite our greening up spirits.  The trees and plants unfurl and awaken this week, as we unwind our senses with:

  1. If an appointment is quick, but we have to drive far for it, we’ll plan a visit to a nearby nursery, or an art store like we did yesterday.  Wandering around, finding beads and ribbons for our Fine Arts class is a fun way to lessen the previously serious mood and get excited about tomorrow’s crafts.  On occasion, I will find something for my atelier… but just seeing all the hues all lined up relaxes me.  New oil paintings list soon!  (Listening to a favourite audiobook also somehow shortens the drive and distracts me from wishing that Maine would clean up more.  It does sadden me that with so much natural beauty here, people choose to pollute their yards…where gardens and even wildflowers could sing.  We focus on our garden…planting as much green air as we can each year.  Perennials are my thing.  I like building up a family of plants.  We take care of them, and they take care of us.)
  2. Sewing up doll clothes is a baby favourite here, and this week I’m joining in to stitch up some creamy soft organic cotton shorts for summer.  They are a little bigger than doll size, but not much…  This is where ironed lace and new shining beads come into the sitting room and library to play with us.
  3. Reading rainy day May poems and Spring Stories with a cup of tea is cosy and embraces the season.  I wrote about forty such tales this week…  We keep a 365 day poetry book on the rug.  It’s massive, but turning the page to read each morning’s poem gives us insight into another’s senses of this day and a different place.  We write our own observations of THIS moment.  Let go of yesterday, and feel today.
  4. Meditating, and a gentle massage of the head, neck, feet, and hands using light pressure on certain points, releases strifes and struggles, leaving space for movement and growth.  Guided mystical musical tracks are very helpful for setting a short, yet effective, time and space for this daily practice.  Stress stores itself in the body…let it go.
  5. When life feels externally unsatisfying, one can control the little things like the week’s flavours.  Yesterday, I baked up some clove-spiced chocolate walnut pastries, our weekly bread, and a spring greens teatime tart with asparagus, green beans, and darling mushrooms.  I love photographing everything from tulips to dishes around our table for my upcoming cookbook (vegan, organic, sugar-free).  Today, we’re planting up some seeds in the garden for more fresh plant foods to enjoy!

A tiny yellow cardigan waits on the back of a chair.  An open sewing box invites nimble fingers to experiment.  All of these little things smile up the mind.  Release and fall into the poetry of the positives that live inside our day.  Love, ~ Amor Milagre

Tactile pleasures satisfy the senses.  Smell the spices, roll out floury dough.  Synesthesia can feel beautiful.

Old tools of stone to crush up beautiful owl-like walnuts connects us to all times.  This is quieter than machines.  There is tact involved and little sounds, but the whirring -pound -trickle- put-put-put is a song I like.

Soft sleepy pajamas…soon…  Oversized for when little legs kick off quilts.  Pleats are needed for now, but are then removed in a few years, and all the while there is a soft, flat, smooth waistline for comfort.  Rest easily, and sleep well.

Oh, for the love of a real weekend!  Here are some happy things we enjoyed today:

  1. Fresh rainfall to nourish our organic garden, which we have been working in all week.  (New garden renovation posts are growing.)
  2. A gifted nurse who helped us to have a quick visit today.
  3. A lake which provided us with peace, wishing stones, and sand races.
  4. Time together to catch up on our spring to do list.  (We are the king and queen of odd little jobs about the house.)
  5. Cooking a cosy dinner of homemade noodles together.  (I have included this pasta dough and various sauce recipes in my upcoming cookbook!)

Early March Days & Cosy Cooking

This March, we are once again reviewing our pantry and foods, writing out more weekly staple recipes, and replacing anything that is not homemade with fresh cooks and bakes like our breads, pasta, and savoury crackers.  We eat mostly fresh vegetables, but these other grain-based foods are not only healthier when handmade, but they taste amazing.  This also means there is less to buy and less to recycle.  We used to make mostly everything, but during renovations, and when we were building our new kitchen, we had to buy a few things.  Now, we’re back to adoring our aprons and stirring up some weekly delights.  My upcoming cookbook (vegan, organic, sugar-free) is growing, with a few new recipes being added in this spring.  It feels good to grow and make our own food, to know what we’re consuming, and to teach our family how to be sustainable and healthy.  We also lessen the concern about germs coming home from the store this way.  Cooking is a way of life, and I’ve always connected to it.  You don’t have to take a class.  Just try things.  You’ll get it.  And then…enjoy!

Tonight’s little dinner is a sumptuous pasta of fennel, peas, garlic, beans, lemon, and fresh noodles.  The dough is like tender dumplings, and it hardly takes a moment to do.  The process is fun and soothing, especially after a long day of testing various types of artwork on the new printer…  I am very particular about colour matching.  Why paint something with beautiful colours just to have it be so very far from the original?  My eyes/brain sense colours well.  I only wish printers did, too.  I’ll make sure the prints are accurate before releasing my newest collections.

New Spring Nursery Baby Animal Art Prints are coming up!  The book illustrations are featured in my upcoming Green Witch Children’s Book.  They’re very sweet and come in neutral natural colours to suit any nursery design.

Little cooks love to name their very own noodle styles, reminiscent of how each region and family in l’Italia name their pasta.  This one is like a shorter twisted pappardelle, which we did cut the dough with that special rolling pin.  It’s fun to collect all the different pasta tools.  I’ll show a pasta here soon, made with a pasta machine.  We also like to make ravioli.

Every week, I make bread and biscuits.  It is a meditation.  The house is scented in love.  Fresh bread and soup are simple earth-connecting sense memories.  We love to keep our food tasting how it was grown.  Carrots taste carrots.  Soon, we’ll be in our gardens, growing up fresh herbs, veg, fruit, and flowers.  I very much look forward to sensing the pollinators again.  Those sweet bees…

I may do part of my film-plan to share cooking lessons again.  I’ll post about that growing project later on when I have more time.  This month is all about editing books and releasing very patient collections…ones that have been waiting on my desk for me to catch up with them.  My unique wax seal stickers release this week!  Wishing you a peaceful day, ~Love, Amor Milagre

Music of the Moment:  I’ll be on the Water, Akron Family

My husband found my old ipod in a box and I’ve been enjoying my old mixes, though my poor ears and scalp aren’t used to wearing headphones anymore…ow.  We’ve been very quiet this past decade as baby cries, house building/renovations, and neighbour pollution are painfully overwhelming to the senses, especially with hyperacusis, high sensitivity, PTSD, and blinding/deafening migraines.  It is a violent harmful act to inflict inescapable sound and vibration pollution on others.  Listen to music so that only you can hear it, inside or with headphones.   I moved away from unkind loud houses and cities in search of quiet nature, only to have our neighbours smoke endless poisonous fogs and blast a wall of unending sound/vibration pollution of their music most of the year.  No, this crazy town won’t help to prevent this.  Why?  I don’t know, as all of this inconsiderate maliciousness was illegal only a few years ago.  Prevent suffering and illness with empathy.  Our family has directly developed serious health conditions from these terrible neighbours’ actions.  It’s most upsetting.  It is not easy to deal with and puts us in danger.  We don’t need more illness.  This was supposed to be our healing time.  So, in your life, be aware of how you affect others.  How do your choices even affect your own Self?  We are all connected.

Now, we’re making a few small ‘peeps’ here and there, even listening to music on low, out loud in the house, and singing along.  I’ve missed listening to music whenever I want.  I suppose I’ve been listening to it in my head all these years and it comes out in humming lullabies.  Our homeschool music lessons and exercise routines have always been fun times to learn new songs, but it’s a fraction of what my past musical life used to occupy.  We are hoping to find a family piano soon.  I had to sell my instruments years ago for rent.  We do have little harps and drums for school here, but I miss the bigger stringed echoes on my heart.  I used to write songs and play, privately.  I grew up in a place where music was taken too seriously, but simultaneously in a non-serious ridiculous way.  It wasn’t a free space for expression, only for criticism.  My little family now is naturally musical, and I encourage all the sweet notes to be enjoyed each day.  I remember every note and lyric to every song I’ve ever heard.  I’d like music to be mine again, a joy.  Singing helps me to breathe.   It’s a connection with the soul.  The memory is astounding.  I teared up at some nostalgic bus ride playlists…music was always my best friend.  You can always count on music to suit any mood.  It’s fun to revisit.  A lot of the songs were so very 90’s, like Fountains of Wayne, I looked down expecting to see a striped shirt under overalls, a mood ring, and to look up to see an old TV playing Pete & Pete.  It’s amazing how music is a time travelling portal.  I skipped over a lot of the albums on purpose.  It’s also a bit difficult when music can hold so much emotion.

Which songs do you light up from when those first familiar notes strum in your brain?  I hope they’re good memories for you, Darlings.  You choose everything!  Listen to what you like now.  I wish I had explored even more types of music when younger, and didn’t just absorb what was around me.  The genres I love now would have definitely been more uplifting than what was playing then.  My favourite blast from the past today was an old bluesy jazz song…one that went on and on in the best way…so full of life…and I had recorded it off of a staticy myspace speaker, yes… and now I’ll get to listen to all sorts of wonderful songs to find who made it.

Healthy Lifestyle: Stay Well Tea

Rainy early spring days are no exception for practicing my daily tea routine of grated ginger root and lemon.  Transitions in weather are some of the best times to bolster health.  This simple way to get well and stay well is magical for us, even for the someone here who doesn’t like tea.  This may be the shortest recipe in my upcoming organic vegan cookbook, but it just might be the most positively impactful.  The other like it is our weekly vegetable soup.  Boosted up by these two, we feel a bit stronger each day.  We don’t wait to eat healthy foods until we are ill, but enjoy this practice daily.  This helps us to feel like we are doing all we can to stay well, and more…with detailed homeschool health lessons.  Learning about what ails you can help you to heal yourself.  Playing detective and solving these troubling riddles makes a world of difference over the course of a week and a lifetime.  Stay well, Love ~ Amor Milagre

August: Organic Cottage Garden Design

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  Getting lost in the intricate lace fairyland of the hydrangea blooms…

I love how a garden changes every day, season, and year.

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  One of my writing nooks. We also have lessons and picnics here…in the shade of the cream umbrella.  The lavender and cleomes circle this garden.  We renovated the gardens last year.  Previously a lawn, this space is now full of flowering trees, perennial flowers, and herbs.  Plant seeds of goodness for pollinators.  It heals all.  We even have some tomatoes up here, as it is the sunniest area of the garden.

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  Weeding a bit today, and I got my first ever bee sting, right through my glove!  Not too bad…just put some ice on it.  Bees love me…ever since I was little…they loved to explore my golden curly hair and just hang out… My Nonna used to say it’s because they think I’m a flower.  I love that idea, and I paint flying pollinators into all of my stories.  I always sat calmly with them, and then they’d move onto something with pollen.  I must have tread on a nest. Sorry, little friends!  Nature tells us important things.  Listen.  I usually do leave the ‘weeds’ as they’re a helpful part of the garden, but we do have some rather aggressive imposter vines that take over and under the garden.  I do minimal editing and pruning.  Plants have their own design plans.  It’s fun to learn of their endless stages.  Also, any broken or old pieces are just left in the garden to become a natural compost.  After making the pathways last summer, the cleomes seeded everywhere, which is the intent, but a few had to be moved out of the gravel and back into the soil.  These rhodies were quite ill when we moved in, so we cut them back hard and now they are full up with new green lovely leaves.  They form a nice border hedge and create privacy with a dense leafy depth and height.  Blooms next year, I’d expect.  In pink!

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  I adore these mixed plant tangles… They’d make a gorgeous textile print.  This one is mostly:  Queen Anne’s Lace/Wild Carrot, Thyme, Sage, Salvia, Vinca, Clover, Anise…  Babies love these little fairy nests.

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  The incredible Blazing Stars have just bloomed…grown from scattered seeds.  Easy as tossing them into the bed.  There are hundreds and the wildlife love them.  Such fancy feathery dresses!

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  The front herb patch went wild this year, but we love to watch the pollinators favour this swaying sea of lace in the breeze so I will only tame it back a bit next year.  The new kitchen looks out onto this stone garden that we made a few years ago.  There was a bed of overgrown shrubs, too close to the house, and a paver pathway.  We took everything out, painted the house a warm heavy cream, and made space for more meadow wildflowers and three Japanese boxwoods.  The pathway was removed and recycled into the back pathway.  We made a stone wall, new pathways, and steps.  Soon, a mudroom door will go nearby.  We have the kitchen door here, too.  Little gardeners can pick some fresh sage for dinner!  I am working on some lace-like snowflake/floral design stencils in the front doorway, which I will post about when finished.

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  Many greens…living together.  Permaculture matters.  Everything depends upon the next and the one before.  Replace lawns and pollutive machines with native plants that form a perennial carpet to keep you cool, hydrated, and full of life!
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  Every window has a view of the garden!  Wake up to nature, go out and converse with her, learn how to be peaceful, bid her a good slumber and get ready for bed…  Sustainable life cycles for:  you, wildlife, the anti-pollution layers of fungi in the soil, the air, water, and for all plants who connect in their own language and routines.  Tread softly in nature.  We are the visitors of the earth, be gentle.

Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design
Amor Milagre Organic Cottage Garden Design.  Grow flowers from seeds to self-seed and spread each year!  I love these large areas of various wildflowers.  In the wind, the whole garden is alive and dancing.  Drought-tolerant is the way to go with climate change, and we have always just let the rain water the garden.  The plants grow stronger this way, and you can enjoy doing other things you love.

New blooms are coming soon…

Love to all of the bees who warn us to be more gentle.

Without you, I cannot think what we’d be.  ~ Amor Milagre
