I write loving, real, feminist characters of all genders and ages to illustrate that peace is possible. Inclusion allows everyone to feel represented, even though we are all unique beings.
During our family reading time and homeschool lessons, I have to spend energy commenting on story details that leave out reality. Too many books are not rooted in positivity, so we have to be careful what we ingest into our memories. Children are forming outlooks. Their memories are amazing. I explain why the characters have these accepted/unacceptable bad habits. Then, we talk about the contrast so that this violence is not brought into our peaceful way of living. We have to research feminist books as women have been edited out of history. Every book, even compiled works on a specific topic or over an extensive time period, only features one or two women. We have found some newly published books about women in history. Why do they have to be separate books?
How much of women’s work has been lost, ignored, stolen, or masked under a different name? It’s bad enough to have to include the violent reality of this world in our inspired, life-loving school, but for every invention or talent to be only represented by males is unacceptable. All day, we say “he, he, he, he…” Where are the women? I want to say, “She, they, he, she, she, he, they, they, she, he, he, she, he, she, they…”
I encourage authors to make up for this lack and deprivation of female inspiration. Write truly feminist books that inspire peace. My books celebrate the beautiful reality of the people in our world. Everyone is a precious soul. All genders are represented and loved. My male characters are kind, respectful, and support the women, children, males, and everyone. My LGBTIQA+ characters are amazing, inspiring, and adored. My women characters are wonderful, respected, and they support everyone. The children in my books teach us the most. They are the light of the world. All of my characters live and grow as their natural selves. There are no dividing groups, just a community of friends. Even the people who don’t have identifiers feel included, safe, and self-loving. Illness and violence are preventable. Nature and gardening are at the center of my stories. If you can take care of everything, then everyone will have what they need. Choose to live peacefully.
Female characters in many books are usually written in a way that shows nothing of our life, our struggle, our joy, our bodies, our hearts, and our thoughts. I write books to include our real lives to show how easily our world can be feminist. There is so much work that needs to be done to help women. Equality is the basic first step. Respect is a choice.
