What is a book you love to read over and over again?  Libraries have a special quality all their own, especially historic libraries.  I find them so romantic with their unique architecture and rows of thoughts so loved and important that they were captured on the page.  Anywhere there are books, we are home.  What wonders lie just beneath each cover?  What friends and dear places can we call ours?  Which ones do you love?  (Leave us a comment to share your favourites.  Click on the post title to comment.)  What spell does it cast over you?  How does the writing inspire you?  What would be in your book if you could write it?  What will you/your heroine/hero do?  You can write it to live today.

Some of our classic favourites are:  The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter, Emma by Jane Austen, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Louise Hay books, Planting Seeds:  Practicing Mindfullness with Children by Thich Nhat Hahn, fantasies, mysteries, and many more.  Mostly, I enjoy writing stories.  If you have any books to recommend, please leave a comment!  (Click on the post title and comment at the bottom of the page.)

Italian Orange & Cheese Plate

One of the healthy family traditions I keep for Christmas are sweet oranges and delicate cheese.  Such a simple and beautiful pairing!

Non-GMO, organic, local, free range, grass-fed ingredients:

Slice oranges horizontally and thinly.  Curl some parmigiano reggiano cheese off the block.  Lightly drizzle a few tbsp of olive oil over the dish.  Grind some pepper and enjoy!  Serve as a snack or appetizer with other fruit, nuts such as these hazelnuts, and cured meats like prosciutto, pancetta, and salami.

For babies and children 6M+, you can slice the oranges the same as above, then peel the rind off and divide the little sections.  These are perfect for little fingers.  Remove any seeds.  Leave pepper out for very young babies as pieces can be big.  Very light on the olive oil.  The scent of the orange is an instant smile inducer and makes for good sniffing practice.

Mandarin oranges are delicious too.  They are often seedless, but it’s good to check before serving.

I find it most fulfilling to listen to certain audio books with positive messages while painting, resting, or cleaning.

Write the story you wish to read.  Live the life you dream of living.

I’ve been catching up on finishing some children’s books.  It’s so much fun to see the characters and words form into an entire world.  The new books will be in the shop this upcoming year as well as the artwork originals, prints, and stationery.  2017 will be a very exciting year!

Spiced Apple Pork and Vegetable Stew

This warmly spiced meal is good for the whole family.  The home is scented in holiday spirit.  You are left to rest while it cooks itself.  Read a classic you love to experience each winter, and pause with a bookmark for a scrumptious dinner.  The soft pieces are perfect for little fingers as well.  The broth is divinely healthy for all.

Non-GMO, organic, local, free range, grass-fed ingredients:

In a crock pot, place a pork roast, sliced apples, carrots, celery, Japanese and regular sweet potatoes, a few tsp cinnamon & nutmeg, pepper, a small pinch of pink Himalayan salt, and a small amount of water.  Put lid on tightly and slowly cook on low for several hours.  The meat and veggies will be very tender and fall apart at the lightest touch.  Plate and add butter if you like.

Cinnamon Carob Pudding

Warm pudding from the stove is an old, winter favourite.  The carob flavour is almost smokey like butterscotch.  Curl up on a chaise with a blanket and a journal for a peaceful evening of wild inventions.

Non-GMO, organic, local, free range, grass-fed ingredients:

1 tsp Cinnamon

3 tbsp Cornstarch

2 tbsp Apricot Spread (no sugar added)

2 tbsp Carob Powder  (A superfood like Cacao, but without natural caffeine.)

2C Unsweetened Coconut Milk or Whole Milk (no sugar added)

2 tbsp Butter

1/4 tsp Vanilla

  1. Mash carob with cornstarch in saucepan with a fork or spoon to flatten any small pieces.
  2. Add small amounts of milk gradually, blending well after each addition.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently. You can start at a higher heat for the first few minutes, but keep stirring and lower the heat so as not to scorch the bottom of the pudding/pan.
  4. Add the vanilla.
  5. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Add butter and apricot spread and stir to melt and blend.
  7. Chill or serve warm.  Serve small portions as this flavour has a richness of individuality.  (Store in a glass container with a lid.)

I love travelling and exploring libraries in other countries.  A long time ago, libraries buzzed with the sharing of information.  They were not the silence-enforced places you tip toe around today.  There is always something new to learn.  It is lovely to get to know the librarians at the local library.  Requesting books, music, movies, and magazines is a fun way to keep updated with new and new-to-you works of art.

Tour the libraries in your area to find one with historic charm.  Curl up with a good book in a cozy chair and fall into the story.  Find out when their baby/children story times are and hopefully you will have a reader who lends out magic each week.

I have only had that great pleasure as a child when one special art teacher read to the students on Fridays.  Within 2 words, everyone was transfixed and hanging on every word thereafter.  The readings these days are hectic because the books chosen underestimate the possibility of the children’s attention span.  Before you can fall into the story, it’s already over, and they’ve moved on to another very short book.

We may have to create something here to fill that gap.  We might add a young reader’s club to accompany our 2017 classes.  The classes may include one about story and illustration development.  Books dot our days and evenings here.  They literally bookend each section of the day.  A well-organized bookshelf is crucial for easy access and a satisfying storytime.

Children deserve to bask in the inventive realm of reality that is possible to keep close to our heart as we age.  It is all the more special if introduced to these worlds when young.  Everything we do matters.  Let’s do it well so we inspire the most amazing smiles that last a lifetime.  The teacher I had inspired my life long passion for writing / illustrating / publishing children’s stories.  I will always find libraries magical, books bewitching, and inventing possible.

You never know when inspiration will strike and who you may see on the way home from the library.

  2. We’ve read your first book more than any other to our children. It’s interesting for us too which helps. My husband likes crime novels, and I enjoy English mystery books and shows. The kids’ interests change each week. Dinosaurs, frogs, hot air balloons, you name it.
